white marble

Marble, also known as white marble, is a metamorphic rock made of limestone. Its main component is calcite (crystalline form of calcium carbonate, CaCO3). It is often used to sculpt as well as decorative materials in buildings and some other types of applications. The word marble is also used to refer to stones that can enhance the gloss or are suitable for decoration.

Origin of white marble

Marble is the result of regional metamorphosis or donation when encountered in metamorphism from carbonate sedimentary rocks such as limestone or dolomite, or metamorphic from pre-existing marble. Metamorphism causes the original rock to be completely recrystallized to form a mosaic structure of calcite, aragonite or dolomite crystals. The temperature and pressure needed to form a marble often destroys the fossils and structure of the original sedimentary rock.

White marble in construction

In construction, especially in the trade of monolithic marble (monolithic) is the term used to refer to the crystalline calcite rocks (and some non-calcite rocks) that can be used as construction stone. For example, “Tennessee marble” is a type of rock containing granular fossils, large proportions of color from gray to pink or chestnuts derived from Ordovician limestone, classified by geologists into the Holston Formation…
